The Arts

At Muskoka Montessori School, the arts are integrated into the curriculum to inspire creativity, cultural awareness, and self-expression. Students engage in music, visual arts, and drama throughout their elementary years, often through cross-curricular connections with history, geography, and global studies.

Visual Arts

The visual arts program is both skill-based and exploratory. Students learn techniques in:

  • Drawing and shading

  • Perspective and composition

  • Use of colour and form

They are introduced to a variety of media including:

  • Pencil and charcoal

  • Watercolour and acrylic paint

  • Pastel and clay

  • Papier mâché and mixed media

Projects often relate to cultural studies, science, or seasonal themes, encouraging students to make meaningful connections across disciplines.

Drama

Dramatic instruction is a formal part of the arts program. Students learn:

  • Basic stagecraft and performance techniques

  • Expression through movement, voice, and character development

  • Collaboration through group scenes and improvisation

Drama fosters confidence, communication skills, and creativity in a supportive and collaborative setting.

Music Education

Music instruction includes both appreciation and theory. Students explore:

  • Basic music theory and composition

  • Rhythmic patterns and musical notation

  • Songs from a variety of cultures and traditions

  • Musical elements integrated into classroom celebrations and historical explorations

Students are encouraged to express themselves through voice, instruments, and movement, building confidence and an appreciation for music as a universal language.

School-Wide Arts Events

Students have the opportunity to showcase their talents and creativity through several annual events, including:

  • A school-wide dramatic production, where all students participate in staging a play

  • A school-wide talent show, celebrating individual and group performances in music, dance, drama, and more

  • An annual art exhibition, where student artwork is displayed for the broader community

These events celebrate the arts as a vital part of the school culture and offer students meaningful experiences in creative expression and public presentation.
