French Language Program
Building Communication and Confidence Through Story, Song, and Experience
At Muskoka Montessori School, we provide French language instruction across all levels, beginning in the CASA program and continuing through Elementary with developmentally appropriate approaches.
CASA (Ages 3–6)
In our CASA classrooms, French instruction is introduced once a week in a way that is consistent with Montessori philosophy. The French teacher acts as a “material” in the environment, moving through the classroom and interacting naturally with the children. This immersive and indirect approach encourages students to absorb the language organically, much like they acquire their first language. Through songs, simple stories, conversation, and games, children develop a foundation for listening and understanding in French without pressure or formal instruction.
Elementary (Grades 1–8)
Histoires en action!
Beginning in Lower Elementary, students participate in a structured French program using Histoires en action!, a dynamic and engaging approach to second language instruction built around storytelling, drama, and music.
Each unit is based on a specially written play that becomes the core of that term’s learning. Students learn:
-
To perform the play, including associated songs and dances
-
Essential vocabulary through meaningful context
-
Language retention through the Gesture Approach, which uses coordinated hand signs to support comprehension and memory
This program supports the development of all four language skills:
-
Listening
-
Speaking
-
Reading
-
Writing
The program also accommodates a wide variety of learning styles and encourages individual work, partner work, and small group collaboration. Activities are varied, engaging, and scaffolded to build fluency and confidence over time.
